ADVICE ON PROMOTING BLOG

To make money from blogging demands you to have large traffic, and to have large traffic demands you to work on promoting your blog early on. Here are some pointers on promoting your blog.

1. Search Engines Take Time

New blogs will take a few months to get significant traffic from search engines. Doing SEO is one way to improve on this. Other traffic sources, such as networking or social media, can boost up your visitor numbers quickly if you have the right strategy – so don’t focus on search engines only.

2. All Traffic Are Not Equal

Responses from visitors to your blog in terms of time spent, depth of pages, interest in content are best if they found what they’re looking for. Generally, these kinds of visitors arrive at your blog from either search engines, subscribers, and from recommendation from other blogs with similar niche. Traffic from social media has been commented to be less responsive and even unlikely to return back to their blogs. Try to consider what type of traffic is best for you when promoting your blog.

3. Post Consistently

Most successful bloggers post consistently and regularly even when they already have large search engines traffic drawn to their older posts. The reasons for posting new content consistently are to grow the number of subscribers, get new pages in search engines, and keep the blog fresh to get votes in social media. So why stop when you can get more?

4. Traffics Are Inconsistent

There are days that traffic goes up, and at times down. It’s natural. Be ready for anything or you might get upset. The most important thing is to get your mindset focused and not let down by a few hurdles.

5. Get More Repeat Visitors

The heart of successful blogs is repeat visitors. Unique visitors are great too, but nothing can guarantee they’ll be back. So, it’s good to really focus on getting more subscribers. They are also the most responsive in terms of giving comments, votes, etc.

6. Get Inbound Links

Having other blogs link to you helps in many ways. They bring visitors in, expose your blog more, and boost your search engine rankings. These links also signify that your content is valuable, trusted, and worthy to pay a visit to. Not only they help with search engine traffic but also build your credibility.

7. Get Traffic from Multiple Sources

Getting huge traffic from one type of traffic, say search engines, doesn’t guarantee it will always stay that way. For example, Google penalizes blogs that violated their guidelines. Likewise, other types of traffic can’t guarantee giving you consistent traffic all the time. So, diversify your traffic sources.

8. Don’t Ignore Small Traffic

Traffics that come from resources such as your comment or forum links are relatively small. But most of the time those visitors find your blog to be very relevant to what they’re searching for and are likely to become loyal readers. So, keep them coming.

9. Build Your Network

To be successful in blogging, you must have strong network. People in your network can provide you valuable advice, link to you, vote for your posts, inspire and encourage you, and even become partners in future projects. To build a strong network you must first be proactive and willing to meet and help others.

10. You Can Buy Traffic

You can buy advertisement to drive traffic to your blog quickly. PPC ads can be efficient and inexpensive if you bid on the right keywords. StumbleUpon also offers an advertising option where you buy traffic at $0.05 per visitor. Running these ads for a few months will drive significant traffic and give you good exposure at low costs.

HOW TO INSTALL NEW TEMPLATES WITHOUT LOSING WIDGETS?

It's frustrating to install a new template on your blog if you lose all your widgets. Here's how to avoid this problem and keep your old widgets on the blog when you install new templates. Don't worry, there's no coding involve. You just have to know where to copy and paste codes in your old template into your new template file.

1. Save your current template first
This is a must. Save the old one first just in case something screws up and you need to get back to the old template.

2. Use a text editor
Don't do any coding in the Blogger Editor; it's too easy to mess things up. Get a text editor to do any code tweaking on your computer. If you have no idea what to use, just use Notepad++. Download the latest Notepad++ Installer.exe file. It's free and it makes it easier for you to do your coding.

3. Open up the old and new template XML files in the text editor
Open them up because you'll need to copy some codes in the old template and paste them in the new template files. These codes that you'll copy and paste are basically the codes for your widgets. You don't have to understand what's going on inside the code; you just have to know where it is and what widget it is for.

4. Find out where the codes are located
Look at the image below. See the  tag? Click on the image to make it larger. All the codes above this tag are mostly CSS, the type of code that controls the appearance (colors, fonts) of your blog. You don't need to copy/paste anything in this section.

The codes below the  tag is the main XML code for your blog. Basically, it's the part that controls the layout (where the sidebars, widgets, headers are) and controls the data flow from Blogger into your blog. This is where all the codes for the widgets you want to save are located.

All your widgets are coded within the tag  ... . All the tags must be located within the  ...  tag. The structure looks something like this:

The above is a sample code on how a widget code looks like in a template XML file. The main location of the widget is identified with the div id label. In this case, div id=sidebar-wrapper. Below the div id is the b:section tag. All widgets must be located within this b:section tag. You don't need to worry if you don't understand much about the div or b:section thingy. The important tag you have to know is the b:widget tag. Note that you can put as many widgets as you want inside the b:section tags.

Here's an actual example of a widget tag embedded inside a b:section tag. The location is sidebar-wrapper, meaning that the widget is placed inside one of the sidebars in the blog. The widget is an image widget, as you can see it being labeled id='Image1'.

The most important thing to note is that the widget code starts with the tag and closed with the  tag. This is the single most important thing you have to know when copying/pasting later on.Remember also that the widget is placed after the  tag and closed with the tag.

Here's another example. The widget is a Linklist widget. You don't have to know the codes inside the widget tag because you won't have to change anything in there.

5. Copy and paste the widgets into new template file
Identify all the widgets you want to keep in your blog after template installation. Locate their codes in the old template file. Remember, these are the codes within the  tags and must be close properly with . Copy the codes for a widget that you want to keep and paste them in the new template file, within the  tags at the location of your choice. Make sure the b:widget and b:section tags are closed properly.

If you don't know the div id location you want to paste them in, just put them in any div id, but must be inside a b:section tag. It'll then show up as a widget in theLayout > Page Elements page (as in the image below) and you can then drag and drop the widgets to any new location.

6. Upload the new template as your new blog layout
Once you've pasted all the widgets you want into your new template, upload the new template into your blog using the upload button shown below.

7. If not sure, test this technique on a test blog first
If you're not sure whether it'll work out okay, try it first in a test blog. Create a test blog with a few junk posts (lorem ipsum), create some widgets, and then try changing into new templates using the technique above. See if you can make it work.

------------------------------------

Easy no?

I bet most of those bloggers who use the basic Blogger templates do so because they all got so frustrated of having them widgets gone every time they install new templates. Now you don't have to stick to those basic ones knowing this trick; plus you've got all the templates you ever wanted here in http://earnby-blog-googlyadsensetips-tricks.blogspot.com/ (just kidding, or not!).

5 Ways to Know if Your Blog is on the Right Track

1) Comments

Comments can be both an empty measurement and a solid indicator that things are going well. If your blog is receiving a lot of comments, that’s probably a terrific sign. However, if the majority of those comments ring to the tune of “great post!” then even 100 are rather meaningless. A couple of valuable comments that provoke discussion are far better than double digit comments that are only there for the benefit of a link. It means that people are finding value in your content and interested in engaging you and other readers regarding that content.

2) Subscribers

All growth is progress. If your subscriber count is growing, then you can consider yourself on the right track. Slow and steady wins the race and it can take months blogging to break into the triple digits. Many people, ourselves included, set unrealistic goals for their subscriber counts. This only leads to disappointment and frustration. Be realistic and remember, blogging is a process, not an event. If your numbers show steady growth, then you’re doing something right. If not, then you need to reevaluate your content, posting frequency or perhaps your social media strategy.

3) Links

Links are the currency of the net and help to pay for whatever it is your blog needs: traffic, social proof and search engine rankings; all are the direct result of high quality links. And one of the best ways to generate quality links is to produce quality content (and make sure that content is seen). The more recognized you are, the more links you will receive. The beauty of incoming links is that they carry a cumulative effect. After a while, people will start linking to you simply because others are.

4) Friends

With blogging, an ever expanding web of friends and blogging buddies is essential to long term success. You could even make the case that who you know is sometimes more important than what you create, though I do believe the quality of your work must always stand on its own. Strive to meet new people and widen your network as best you can. I’m not saying to strike up phony friendships with people you’d otherwise have no interest in. Rather, find people you are genuinely interested in and can learn from. You will have created a network of mentors that can teach you a lot more than a dozen courses. If there is a natural complimenting of each other‘s strengths and weaknesses, all the better.

5) Niche

Many bloggers make the mistake of not clearly defining their niche. I know I’ve made the same mistake several times myself. If you are blogging as a hobby, it is unnecessary to build a fence around your ideas. If you are looking to turn your blogging into profit, or a full-time living, it is essential that you understand the audience you are targeting and how best to market to them.

11 Tips for Getting Your Comments Noticed on a Popular Blog

1. Be the Early Bird

One of the best ways to stand out from the crowd is to be get in early. I know numerous bloggers who are great at leaving the first comment on a post and generating some good traffic as a result. Of course being first won’t help you if you don’t have anything worthwhile to say - so read on….. (warning: being first all of the time can be quite annoying both for the blogger whose blog you’re commenting on as well as other readers. I know of a few people who’ve actually hurt their reputation by being too eager to comment on every post without actually adding value to conversations.

2. Share an Example

A great way to add value to a post that someone else has written is to give an example that illustrates their main point. Quite often bloggers writing ‘how to’ or ‘instructional’ posts cover the theory of a topic really well but fail to give practical examples of how it works itself out in reality. I find that readers really love to see examples - so if you can give them in comments they’ll often be grateful and will check out who is behind them. The examples could be to your own work - or that of others.

3. Add a Point

Did the blogger miss a point on their post? Extending the post by adding another argument or point can improve the conversation and show yourself off to be someone who knows what they’re talking about. Some bloggers will even highlight your comment in an update to the post.

4. Disagree

One way to stand out from the crowd is to disagree with the post and/or what others are writing in comments. This isn’t something you will want to do on every comment that you leave (and it could be something that gets you into trouble) but it can be quite refreshing to see someone who dares to put forward a different idea to everyone else. Of course you don’t need to do it in an argumentative or attacking way - but respectfully and politely disagree (where you actually do) and you can actually create a real impressions on others.

5. Write with conviction, passion and personality

Sometimes when I read the comments left on blogs I wonder if there is anyone with personality behind them or whether they’re written by some sort of zombie like half human half robotic bloggers. Inject some feeling, passion, conviction and emotion into your posts. This doesn’t mean you need to write everything in CAPS or use lots of EXPLANATION MARKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - but when a post excites you, let that feeling enter your comments, when you are happy, let your comment be cheery, when a post evokes anger - don’t be afraid to comment with a little edge.

6. Use Humor

As a blogger who has a blog with posts that can get hundreds of comments I know just how mind numbing it can be to read through them all. One type of comment that snaps me out of this state when I’m in moderation mode is a comment that makes me laugh. Of course humor can also be misinterpreted and cause offense - so be a little careful :-)

7. Ask a Question

I notice here on ProBlogger that it is often comments that ask questions that get the most responses from other commenters. I guess it makes sense - asking a question calls for a response - we’re all wired to answer them - so they do stop people in their tracks a little and cause them to at least stop and think about how they’d answer it (whether they do or not).

8. Formatting Comments

I want to say right up front that this one should be done with caution (and could make you look like a try hard spammer) - but a subtle and clever use of formatting in comments can actually draw the eye to your comment. Scan through the comments left on a highly commented upon post and see what you notice. In most cases it’s only broken up by the names of commenters. Many blogs will allow you to use html in comments - allowing you to bold wordsuse italics and more (for example here at ProBlogger using ‘blockquotes’ in comments will change the formatting. Do this too much and you can actually find yourself in trouble - but bolding the occasional word for emphasis, using a little white space, using a symbol etc can give those viewing the page a subtle visual cue to look at your comment. Like I say - this should be done with caution.

An example of this is to bullet your comments with different symbols. A number of readers of ProBlogger do this using symbols like ‘**’ or ‘–>’

9. Helpful Links

We’ve debated whether leaving links in posts is good practice previously - but my opinion is that when a link is helpful to those reading and when it adds value to the conversation in some way that it’s OK. I personally don’t like signature links in comments - but links as examples not only will potentially send people to your blog - they actually act as a visual cue (web users are wired to be on the look out for them).

10. Comment Length

Are all the comments on a post long? Leave a short one - it’ll stand out. Are all the other comments short? Leave a long one - again, it’ll stand out.

11. Lists/Break it down

A big turn off with comments can be when someone leaves a long detailed comment that has massive blocks of text. This can often be made to look worse than it is when the comments area is actually narrower than the area given to posts (as in here at ProBlogger). One way to break up the amount of text is to break your comment down into a list of short posts.

So, ideally the first thing you want to make sure is that your blog is popular online and has a good number of visitors coming to it on a regular basis.

Selling products

There are several powerful and effective ecommerce plugins that you can use for your blog. These can help you transform your blog into a shopping cart that allows you to sell products within the blog. So, let’s say you own a blog that deals with software and associated products. You discuss the latest developments, technological advancements and general tips and know how on selecting the best software online. In addition to just giving out valuable information to customers you can add a monetary value to your blog by selling actual, high quality software. However, you need to have a good quality customized shopping cart as well as a variety of payment processors that allow customers to pay through various modes. The other thing you need to do is to persuade your customers to buy from your blog. So, your advertising skills need to be pretty good!

Google Adsense

Google’s Adsense is probably one of the most used revenue generating tools by websites and blogs alike. It works like a large affiliate network where you can place Google’s textual ads onto your blog or site. Then whenever a user clicks through your blog onto these links you get a share of the revenue. It is an easy to use tool that is free of cost to register. There is a bit of code that you need to copy paste into your browser to activate Adsense but that’s all there is to it!

Social networking sites are literally an amazing way to get more popularity for your website or blog online. Social networking is basically an offshoot of the Web 2.0 technology that has taken the internet world by storm. You can use various social bookmarking sites like Digg, Reddit etc, to bookmark other sites and get bookmarked by other blogs and sites too! It is a give and take system that promises massive traffic and customers to your blog. If you are selling products on your blog you want the maximum number of visitors into your site and for this optimization is key. When customers come to your landing page they want to see something of value that will compel them to buy from your blog. This is where optimization and call to action to persuade customers to buy come into the picture. It is these aspects that will impact the sales conversion ratios on your blog.

Search Engine Friendly Websites

You can create a search engine friendly website, by taking care of a few pointers. But, Creating a search engine friendly site does not necessarily mean that you will get top 10 listing for a particular keyword or keyword phrase. It is however a significant step if you want to rank anywhere near the first few pages of the search engine results. A site that is not search engine ready may not even appear in the results for any query.

Why my website is not ranking?

It depends on the keywords, backlinks, site age, site content and your competitors. The use of CSS alone does not help a site rank, but the cleanliness and ease of site navigation that helps. Search engines love good navigation, ease of use and readability for a visitor.

Focus on Quality Content

Put your energy and time to include quality content in your site. The content should drive people to come to your page day after day or week after week to see new updated content.

Avoid Flash and Videos

Flash in your site can really attract visitor's but it is not spider-friendly. Robots will not index flash content site. Most search engine spiders are still unable to properly index Flash content. Search engine spiders are designed to read text and ignore images, so placing the majority of your site's content in a Flash file leaves most search engines without much content to read and use to determine your site's ranking.

Use CSS this make site more friendly.

Create Relevant Title Tags and descriptions

Validate HTML Code

Use Straight HTML Navigation Links on Your Website.

Remove Hidden Text and text with very small fonts.

Compliment your Java script attractive menus with a simple sitemap in your webpage or a simple menu somewhere at the bottom.

Use Sitemaps (HTML and XML sitemap ( XML is for search engine)
Sitemaps are pages containing text links to all the other pages on the site

SEO Keyword Research

Steps for Keyword Research

1. Make a initial list of every possible search word/phrase referred to as keywords that a potential customer may use to look
for your product, information or services that you have on your website. Use more phrases rather then individual words.

2. Don't use highly competitive keywords initially in the first phase of your seo as your seo handwork would get wasted. Try getting your pages ranked for less competitive keywords (but relevant) initially .

3. The more information you can include in your keywords , the better. What I mean by information is be specific about the
location or services you provide. Add your location to your keyword if your content is geographically sensitive.

For example: A person may use "search engine optimization India" is you are looking for an SEO from India.

4. Add and refine the keywords you listed above by analyzing your competitors keywords. For each of the top 3 pages you find in Google, yahoo and msn make a list of the title and keyword tags. See if you can find patterns of why these 3 pages are ranked for the keywords you wanted to be ranked for.

My approach to remove and prune the above keyword list is to

  • Remove difficult terms
  • Remove Over-Competitive terms
  • Use questions for which your website would provide answers or solutions
  • Remove Ambiguous and broad terms (try to be as specific as possible)

5. Try to append the following most common action words to your keywords wherever relevant and make sure your website caters to them.

Some of the action words are:

Free
Buy
Find
Purchase
Discounted
Lowest Price
Luxury
Cheap

and so on.

6. Avoid keywords that do not ad any value or weight to your keyword list such as

The
Of
For
Or
This
And
That
To
www
web

and so on.

7. Keep track of your server logs or stats to check what people have searched for (keyword) to reach your site. keep track of those main top keywords that people have used to reach your site and hence make them your primary keywords over a long span of time to capture the market for those keywords in Google, Yahoo and MSN.

8. Ask your customers and potential customers what all keywords they had used in order to get to your site. Try to pick out the most relevant keywords from the list and use them on your website.

9. Try getting a ranking by using the most common misspelled keywords.

This is the only keyword tracker I have ever needed to get the job done. It is reasonably priced and the features seem almost endless. You can even download a free version and use most of the functions and get by if you wish. Paying definitely had its benefits though. You can research a ton of words at a time and analyze your online competitions back links. WebCEO is the only program I have ever needed to accomplish high rankings on good keywords that I have found with little competition

Google Pagerank

The astoundingly huge number of websites on the Internet today has brought about a correspondingly huge demand to find ways to rise above the competition. The race is on among the various websites to consistently rank high in the search engine results pages or SERPs of the major search engines such as Google and Yahoo.

For websites that rely on a healthy influx of visitors such as monetized blogs and other income generating websites, the primary focus is on how to draw in a large number of people on a consistent basis. For this particular purpose, achieving a high Google Pagerank has proven to be an effective course of action.

How Google Pagerank Started

Google PageRank is the result of the combined efforts of two Stanford University programmers named Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who developed the ranking system in the mid 90’s. It took the two of them 3 years to devise an algorithm that could rank webpages numerically depending on a certain set of factors, which we will cover in more detail later on in this article.

The first successful prototype was finally finished in 1998, after which they went on to establish the Google search engine. Over the years, Google PageRank has become the de facto standard by which their search engine ranks individual webpages.

The Google Pagerank Algorithm over the years

The original Google PageRank algorithm that was developed by Page and Brin was actually a lot different than the one that is commonly used today. A great many changes have been implemented in the course of its history, and while the original algorithm can readily be viewed on many websites all over the Internet, the one that is actually used today is somehow shrouded in mystery.

Google Pagerank defined

Google PageRank is quite simply a system by which websites are ranked by a number from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest possible ranking. A good way of looking at it is that a high Google Pagerank is somewhat like being highly regarded by the community–in this case the online community. A higher Google Pagerank means that your website enjoys a higher vote of confidence by Google. In relation to this, any links from websites that have a high Google Pagerank sites also enjoy this “trusted” privilege.

How Google PageRank affects your website

In today’s current cyber climate of fierce competition and overcrowding, a high Google Pagerank, can spell the difference between your websites eventual success or failure. A website that aims to generates a healthy flow of revenue through the continuous influx of new visitors, should definitely take PageRank very seriously.

Many people have the mistaken notion that a high Google PageRank automatically assures a high SERP ranking. This is not the case at all, and the reality is that a high Google Pagerank has very little to do with even Google’s search engine results, and other search engines do not even take this factor into consideration.

What Google PageRank can be useful for is for websites that rely on a good flow of traffic such as the monetized blogs that we mentioned earlier. A high Google Pagerank can affect everything from how much you are able to charge advertisers to place ads on your website, to how much you can eventually sell your website for. If you have a high enough ranking, you can even charge other sites for the privilege of linking to their site.

How to achieve high Google PageRank

Numerous techniques have been devised over the years to help websites achieve a high Google Pagerank, but the most effective way to do that is still by doing what every good blog should do in the first place, and that is to provide quality content.

Another factor that you should keep in mind is that Google PageRank is heavily dependent on links. Both incoming and outgoing links have major roles to play in your PageRank. Every type of link that you can gather–including linkbacks, trackbacks, and backlinks are taken into consideration. The combined value of these incoming links has a lot to do with achieving a high Google PageRank.

But then again, you should also as much as possible gather links from websites that have a high Google Pagerank. The value of a link depends on the ranking of that particular site that you are linking from. You could have plenty of links from websites that either don’t have a PageRank or have a relatively low one, and these links may not be as effective as only a handful of links from sites that have high Google Pageranks. The converse is also true: the higher your PageRank is, the more valuable your site will be to other websites who link to it.

One other thing that you should consider is that the older your website is, the more trusted and favorable it is to Google. A website with plenty of pages, a lot of incoming links, and also plenty of internal links to other pages within your website–all these are well regarded by Google. It is easy enough to link to other pages within your site; a good way to do that is by featuring a “recent post” section somewhere on your opening page.

Many people have actually been known to buy incoming links from sites that have a high Google PageRank. This is not really a good idea for many reasons, some of them being that they cost money, and is therefore not really financially feasible for a new website, and more seriously, when Google gets wind of your actions, you may be penalized or suspended.

The bottom line

Quite simply, the most effective and efficient ways to achieve a high Google PageRank is by getting linked to by plenty of websites AND by hosting quality content. Having plenty of quality content will not only attract more links to your website, it will also require more pages, which will in turn make your website more attractive to Google
